Strike at Ports on the U.S. East Coast and Gulf Coast
Espoo, 2.10.2024
Dear Customers,
As of midnight this Tuesday, October 1st, port workers in the United States, represented by the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA), have gone on strike, directly affecting 36 ports located on the U.S. East Coast and Gulf Coast. This strike is the result of stalled negotiations with the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX), which had offered a proposal including a 50% wage increase. However, the ILA rejected this offer, deeming the wage guarantees and protections against automation insufficient.
The last strike of this magnitude occurred in 1977 and lasted more than six weeks; the duration of the current strike remains uncertain. There is speculation about possible intervention from the U.S. government, although this could negatively affect the Democratic presidential campaign.
With the suspension of activities, a significant increase in cargo clearance times is expected, along with congestion that could raise storage and demurrage costs.
Below are the main affected ports:
• Port of New York/New Jersey (NY/NJ)
• Port of Savannah (Georgia)
• Port of Charleston (South Carolina)
• Port of Norfolk (Virginia)
• Port of Baltimore (Maryland)
• Port of Miami/Port Everglades (Florida)
• Port of Houston (Texas)
• Port of Jacksonville (Florida)
• Port of New Orleans (Louisiana)
