China Typhoon Update | 26 August 2026
Dear Valued Customers, we would like to provide an update regarding the current typhoon activity in China and its potential impact on logistics operations.
Typhoon Narra
Typhoon Narra is expected to make landfall in Southern China, primarily affecting the Guangxi region. At this stage, no significant disruption is anticipated for China’s main international ports, and logistics operations at the major gateway ports are expected to continue as normal.
Typhoon Sauda
A second typhoon, Sauda, is forecasted to impact Zhejiang Province this weekend. We have just received notification that Ningbo Port will be closed starting tonight as precautionary measures are implemented.
At this stage, no similar notice has been issued for Shanghai Port. However, given the projected path of the typhoon, operational restrictions or temporary closures may also be implemented in Shanghai over the weekend if wind conditions become severe.
Potential Logistics Impact
While temporary port closures are common during typhoon events, the main challenges usually arise from:
- Suspension of vessel operations and pilotage services
- Temporary closure of terminals and container yards
- Delays to truck pick-up and delivery activities
- Congestion and schedule adjustments once operations resume
- Possible vessel omissions, schedule changes, or port rotation adjustments by shipping lines
Even relatively short closures can create a backlog of cargo movements, particularly at major hubs such as Ningbo, which may result in local congestion and delays extending beyond the duration of the weather event itself.
